  • Can a schedule help hyperactivity in toddlers? #Autism Challenges🧩

In the world of autism, hyperactivity in toddlers poses unique challenges that require a deeper understanding. Hyperactivity is a common behavior observed in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and can significantly impact their daily lives. From incessant fidgeting to perpetual restlessness, these children are constantly on the move, making it difficult for them to focus and engage in tasks.

Can a schedule really rein in the whirlwind of hyper-activity in autism? You betcha! Meet Jacob and my students, craving the comforting embrace of predictability. With schedules, they steer their ships through anxiety’s stormy seas, mastering tasks like true captains. 🚢

    Managing hyperactivity in autistic toddlers

Effectively managing hyperactivity in autistic toddlers requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the underlying factors contributing to this behavior. The following strategies can be implemented to support these children and their families:

    1. Structured routines and schedules: Establishing a predictable and consistent daily routine. This may include incorporating visual schedules, transition cues, and clear expectations for activities and transitions.
    1. Sensory integration techniques: deep pressure can help autistic toddlers with hyperactivity self-regulate and manage their sensory needs.
    1. Environmental modifications: Adapting the physical environment can significantly impact the behavior of autistic toddlers with hyperactivity. This may include minimizing distractions, providing a designated quiet space for calming activities, and ensuring the availability of appropriate fidget toys or sensory tools.
    1. Positive reinforcement and behavior management: Implement a positive reinforcement system. Consistent behavior management strategies, such as clear rules and consequences, can also be beneficial.
    1. Physical activity and exercise: Incorporating regular physical activity and exercise into the daily routine can help channel the toddler’s energy in a constructive manner. This may include activities like swimming, trampoline jumping, or structured play in a sensory-friendly environment.
    1. Caregiver support and education: Providing caregivers with education and training on managing hyperactivity in autism can empower them to implement effective strategies at home.

Knowing how to create a simple visual schedule will help reduce overwhelm and increase independence! Need to know more? check out this post: How can using schedules can change your child’s life?

    Autism and Calming Exercises

Sometimes, a little physical activity can work wonders in calming down hyper-active toddlers with autism. Not only does it help expend their excess energy, but it also aids in nervous system regulation.🤸‍♂️

    – Jumping Jacks: A classic exercise that gets the heart pumping and the body moving. Encourage your child to join in the fun and jump along with them. It’s a great way to release pent-up energy and promote a sense of calm.

    – Figure 8 Movement: Have your child trace the shape of a figure 8 in the air with their hands or feet. This simple yet effective exercise helps integrate both sides of the brain, promoting better coordination and focus.🔄

Incorporating these exercises into your child’s daily routine can provide much-needed sensory input and help them regulate their nervous system. Plus, they’re a fun way to bond and engage with your little one!

    The ADHD Conundrum

Toddlers, pre-adolescents, and adults with autism often grapple with neurological regulation, leading to restlessness and hyperactivity. But fear not, fellow parents! Environmental factors like sound and lighting can also stir the hyperactivity pot. 🌪️

Whether the lights need to be dimmed or noise cancelling headphones put on we can work through this and learn together. Jacob learned sight words by jumping on the rebounder while I flashed cards. He can tolerate the vacuum with head phones, just don’t give up.💡

Signs and symptoms of hyperactivity in autism

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of hyperactivity in autistic toddlers is essential for early intervention and effective management of this behavior. Some of the common signs and symptoms of hyperactivity in autism include:

    1. Excessive physical movement: Autistic toddlers with hyperactivity may exhibit constant fidgeting, restlessness, and an inability to sit still for extended periods. They may frequently jump, run, or climb, often without a clear purpose or goal.
    1. Difficulty in focusing and sustaining attention: These toddlers may have a short attention span, quickly shifting their focus from one activity to another, making it challenging for them to engage in tasks or follow instructions.
    1. Impulsive behaviors: Autistic toddlers with hyperactivity may act impulsively, without considering the consequences of their actions. They may interrupt conversations, grab toys from others, or engage in dangerous behaviors without hesitation.
    1. Emotional dysregulation: Hyperactivity in autism can be accompanied by emotional outbursts, tantrums, and difficulty in managing their feelings. Toddlers may experience sudden mood changes, become easily frustrated, or have difficulty calming themselves down.
    1. Sensory-seeking behaviors: Autistic toddlers with hyperactivity may engage in sensory-seeking behaviors, such as spinning, rocking, or constantly touching objects, as a way to self-regulate and cope with their heightened sensory experiences.
    1. Disrupted sleep patterns: Hyperactivity in autism can lead to difficulties in falling asleep, frequent nightwakings, and overall poor sleep quality, which can further exacerbate the child’s behavioral challenges.

Recognizing these signs and symptoms early on is crucial for seeking appropriate support and interventions to help autistic toddlers with hyperactivity manage their behaviors and thrive in their developmental journey.

Common challenges faced by toddlers with hyperactivity in autism

Toddlers with autism who exhibit hyperactive behaviors often face a multitude of challenges that can significantly impact their daily lives and overall development. One of the primary challenges is the difficulty in focusing and maintaining attention, which can hinder their ability to engage in learning, play, and social interactions.

Additionally, the constant state of physical and mental restlessness can make it challenging for these toddlers to participate in structured activities, follow instructions, and complete tasks. This can lead to frustration, tantrums, and behavioral outbursts, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the child and their caregivers.

Hyperactivity in autistic toddlers can also disrupt their sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty in regulating their emotions. This, in turn, can impact their overall well-being, cognitive development, and social-emotional growth. Parents and caregivers often struggle to find effective strategies to manage these behaviors, which can be both physically and emotionally draining.

    Solutions Ahoy! Taming Hyperactivity

So here I am, armed with a steaming cup of coffee and a treasure trove of tips. ☕ Let’s dive into some gems:

A Great life begins with a plan!
Our son Jacob has great days when there is a plan!

Have A Plan For Your Child With Autism

Have a plan for your child with autism, or they will have a plan for you!

So, if you have watched any of the Facebook Lives I’ve done for Autism Awareness Month or just FYI’s I’ve posted on autism strategies and tips, you know that I’ve said, “being a 24/7 mom when the full-time hands-on part doesn’t stop at 18 it’s quite challenging.” 💪

Being a mom is challenging, but when you are still responsible for someone else’s haircut, manicure/pedicure, food/clothes shopping, it can get overwhelming very quickly. 🛒✂️👗 So, let’s stick together and get a plan and put some routines/structures in place. 🗓️

Life can be great, friends, and I want to help show you how. 🌟 Follow my Facebook and Instagram pages as I will share more autism parenting strategies. 📲 Also, you can check previous blog: Autism mom, what happens when being a hands on mom doesn’t stop at 18?

    Parenting A Child With Autism

Our top priority is helping Jacob be confident, happy, and independent. The first parenting strategy is setting up schedules. 📅

Giving Jacob a schedule removes the anxiety of not knowing what his day holds. It also helps because he doesn’t do well with long directions and back-and-forth conversations. He has receptive and expressive language delays, so verbal communication isn’t ideal for keeping him happy and on track.

He loves to be independent, and schedules give him a way to control his day and have choices while living his best life. 🌟 This keeps us from having to give him verbal reminders all the time, which would be annoying.🧩

    Support For Parents of Autism

What support do parents need to know about? You can and should have support from family, friends, professionals, and other parents. Surround yourself with people that you feel comfortable with and understand you and the family dynamics.😔

The complexities of autism can leave you feeling confused, frustrated, and desperate sometimes, depending on what stage of life you and your child are in at the time. 🧩

    Autism Family Support

When Jacob was little, my mom and I would help each other out. She would watch the boys for me, and I would take the boys and go stay with my dad so she could get out of the house. My dad had COPD in his later years and needed assistance. Family support can be a lifeline, but it can also be challenging to navigate the emotional dynamics.

Some families of children who have autism feel judged by other family members who think you are just spoiling your child and not trying to train them up in the way they were raised. This judgment can be hurtful and isolating, making it even more important to find supportive and understanding family members who can provide real help and empathy.👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

    Professional Support for Autism
    Smiles_family_fun
Autism is not easy for the child or the family.#autismfamily

The professional relationship is probably the easiest to navigate because there’s no emotional attachment. If I don’t like a doctor, I can just get another one. But family and friends are much different because you might feel misunderstood or feel like you can’t say what you really think because you don’t want to upset the family dynamic. 🩺🩻

    Friends and Social Support

Sometimes friends stop coming around or asking you out because you have to say “no” to invitations due to the lack of regular babysitters for your child. A child with special needs cannot be left with just any babysitter.

This can be isolating, but finding understanding friends who get your situation can make a big difference.👭

    Autism Community Supports

Look to organizations like the Autism Society, TEACCH, ABA therapy, and more in your area. Find support groups and agencies that can help you get a plan for your child with autism. Here is one I found interesting: https://epidemicanswers.org/developing-a-biomedical-plan-for-your-child-with-autism/

These organizations provide invaluable resources and connections to other parents and professionals.🏢

A big resource can be other parents of children with autism because they are living the life too. They have experiences that may offer better advice because they’ve already lived it and worked out some solutions. Connecting with other parents can provide a sense of community and shared understanding.🤗

    Hands on Mom

What happens when you’re an autism mom? Well, the adventure doesn’t always end at 18—it’s a lifelong journey! 🌟

In our family, everyone’s career paths took a detour. Mom pursued a Master’s in special education, Dad became a firefighter after Jacob’s seizure scare, and big brother Nicholas shifted to a more family-centered career path. Talk about a family affair! 🚒📚

Being a hands on mom is a 24/7 gig, no doubt. But for autism parents, the journey doesn’t always follow the typical script.

While other people’s children may pursue a  job, or first apartment, our reality can look a bit different. What happens when the 24/7 doesn’t stop at 18? Let’s navigate this unique path together. 🌟

    Autism meltdowns in public

But what does it really mean to be an autism mom? On a day like Mother’s Day, while others are being celebrated and showered with hugs, some autism moms are facing another day of chaos and frustration. Instead of enjoying family gatherings, they may be dealing with meltdowns and tantrums, unable to partake in simple activities like dining out due to the fear of emotional outbursts.💔😔

    Autism Mom Stress

Ah, the life of an autism mom—it’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I’m thinking of moms this week because today is Mother’s Day.  We had a family vote and opted for picking up dinner and bringing it home. None of us wanted to deal with crowds and wanted to enjoy each other and relax.

Stress is no stranger to motherhood, but for autism moms, it can be especially intense. The sleepless nights and constant worry take a toll, requiring an extra dose of kindness and grace. It’s a journey that demands strength and perseverance, one that often goes unrecognized.💔😔

    Raising a child with autism
    Smiles_family_fun
Autism is not easy for the child or the family.

Raising a child with autism involves similar aspirations as raising any child: happiness, independence, and confidence. Each child, including those with autism like Jacob, may navigate different levels of independence, happiness, and confidence.

While Jacob may not reach the same level of independence as some other children, he still experiences independence, joy and confidence in his own way. As parents, our aim is to support him in developing life skills that enhance his independence to the best of his ability. Every day presents an opportunity to empower him further on his journey.

Raising a child with autism involves nurturing happiness, independence, and confidence tailored to their unique abilities. We empower our son Jacob to thrive, embracing his strengths and providing structure and support along the way. 🌈💪

    Creating an Environment for Success

You need to understand your child and create an environment that sets him up for success. Consider the child’s strengths and weaknesses.Jacob’s  biggest weaknesses are in communication and sensory stimulation. We use very little spoken language to redirect behaviors and communicate his work and schedule.

We use schedules as a way to communicate with him. He needs structure and routine to have less anxiety and we need to tell him our expectations as his parents and family. So visual schedules have been used  since he was young.

Unlock your child’s potential by creating environments tailored to their needs.🎨🗓️

    The Power of Schedules

You see, when Jacob was younger, the mere mention of autism sent our world into a tailspin. The meltdowns were relentless, triggered by the overwhelming confusion of a world he struggled to comprehend. Simplifying the Classroom Environment

Now, teachers, listen up!  If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this wild ride called parenting a child with autism, it’s this: structure and routine are your best friends. In the classroom too. Trust me, when your students understand what’s expected of them and can rely on the comforting sameness of a well-established routine, magic happens. 🎩✨

Think about it like this: imagine trying to follow a complicated set of directions in a language you barely understand. Sounds pretty stressful, right? Well, that’s exactly how it feels for students with autism when faced with a barrage of verbal instructions and constantly changing expectations.

    Simple Visuals

But fear not, dear teachers, for I come bearing the gift of simplicity! 🎁 By learning to streamline your communication and incorporating simple visuals into your schedules, you can create an environment where every student can have success daily without anxiety. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.

So, next time you’re tempted to unleash a torrent of words upon your students, take a step back and ask yourself: “How can I simplify this?” Whether it’s breaking tasks down into manageable steps or using visual aids to reinforce concepts, remember: less is more.

Celebrate Successes no matter how small

And above all else, remember to set everyone up for success. By creating a classroom that values structure, and routine  you’ll not only reduce anxiety but also empower your students to thrive. After all, isn’t that what teaching is all about? 📚🌟

So here’s to embracing the power of schedules. By simplifying our approach, and setting our students on the path to success—one structured day at a time. You’ve got this, teachers!🍎
